LOAD Day 4 - Twist and Shout (Out)

Welcome back for another day of LOAD 2019!  Today, I am sharing my page for Day 4, using the prompt based on the twister in the “Wizard of Oz”.  The prompt was to tell a story with a twist, but I chose to focus on the twister itself, and tell a tale from my childhood about living through a tornado.

One of the things I love about doing LOAD is that it reminds me of all the stories I need to tell.  I think we often get so focused on the PHOTOS of our lives, that we forget all about the stories and events that DON’T always have photos.  And we are so busy creating pages and albums of our children, our trips, and our holidays, that we don’t always tell the stories of our own childhood or share the bits and pieces of our life that share who we are and where we came from. For me, that is the whole purpose of scrapbooking…to tell those stories so they aren’t forgotten…to share them with future generations who will want to know who we are and how we lived.

I didn’t have any pictures of my own from this event, but a quick search of the internet turned up dozens of photos I could easily download from various archives.  I printed them at a smaller scale so I could fit more to one page, as I didn’t really think this warranted a 2-page layout.  I also found a photo of the next day’s front page of the local newspaper, so I printed that (reduced, of course) onto parchment and inked it for additional aging.

The background paper came from Basic Grey, sorry I can’t remember which line. I was looking for something distressed looking.  It probably didn’t matter since it’s mostly covered up anyway. I wanted to really add to the sense of chaos and destruction, so I skewed all the elements on the page, and even ripped and inked the edges of the journaling that I printed on parchment paper.  I didn’t think it needed a title in the true sense of the word, since the headline on the paper says it all, but I did add a date near the top, using a rolling stamp. I think the stamp’s messy imprint adds to the disarray of the page.

A word about the parchment paper….  If you follow my Facebook page, Instagram, or this blog, you may have noticed that I’ve used the same parchment paper several times lately.  If I were scrapbooking chronologically, as many people do, I certainly would not have done that because then all my pages would start to look the same.  That’s one of the things I love about scrapbooking in no particular order – I work on the pages as the inspiration comes to me, perhaps telling a story from my childhood one day, and creating a page about my son’s high school orchestra the next.  Since the pages are never side-by-side in the same book, you would never know that I went through an “eyelet stage” or an “embossing stage”, or even a “parchment paper stage”.  So as new products come out, I feel free to use them on any of my projects, and my albums are never “dated” by a certain style or technique.

I also want to give a shout out to everyone who will be at Scrapbook Expo next weekend.  I will be in the crop room most of the time, so if you are there, or if you see me on the floor, come over and say "Hi," and mention the blog. I love hearing from you! Even better, ask for a selfie and post it on your Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram page.  You can tag me, Crafty Neighbor, or both!  Your tag will enter you in a drawing for a cool prize pack, and everyone will get a little gift for tagging me!

Next up – our prompt is about being in an unfamiliar environment, and we can use a technique we’ve never tried, or one we don’t use very often.  I’m thinking I might do something digital!  If I do, I may make a process video.  This should be fun!

Keep crafting!

Hidely-Ho...Back from Hiatus

Hidely-Ho, Neighbors!  I’m coming back to the blog after a very long (and not entirely intentional) hiatus and the first thing I want to do is share with you what’s been going on here at Crafty Neighbor the last few months.  I feel really bad that I haven’t posted anything in a while, but when I give you the rundown of what I’ve been up to, I think you’ll agree I’ve had my hands full.  So I hope you’ll forgive me, and I promise to get some fun projects posted here on the blog as soon as possible!

As you may know, in addition to running Crafty Neighbor, I am also a travel agent, working from home at my own little Crafty Neighbor Travel.  One of my favorite things to do is organize group cruises (especially my scrapbooking cruises!) and this year I’ve had the good fortune to be able to cruise with three of them.  We have also hosted our semi-annual scrapbook garage sale (July) and our “Think Pink” Crop for the Cure fundraiser (September) for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk (November).

Fundraising for the 3-Day took up a great deal of my time this year, but I was determined to walk this year, so fundraise I must.  I also needed to spend a lot of time training, but unfortunately, my father became really ill in July, and he is now at home with hospice care, which has required me to travel back and forth to my hometown over 350 miles away as often as I can to help care for him.  But before I start sounding all sad, I do feel very blessed that Dad is doing a little better at the moment, I did raise enough money to participate in my 3-Day walk, and just a few short weeks ago I returned from our 8th Annual Scrapbooking Cruise where we had a fabulously amazing time!

So that’s what I’ve been up to these last few months, and I’m sorry if I’ve left you in the lurch!  But just because I wasn't’ posting on the blog doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy creating lots of goodies to share with you, so I’m really excited to show you some of them over the coming weeks, and I hope you’ll be excited to see them, too!

One of the projects I’ve been involved in has been a great source of comfort to me throughout my Dad’s illness.  In July, right before Dad was sent home from the hospital, I took a class at Personal Scrapbook in Allen, Texas on Bible Journaling taught by Tracy Pounds, the owner of the Little Blue House in Keller.  I had seen some blog posts and pictures on Pinterest, and I was intrigued, so of course I had to give it a try. I love my regular art journal, but I especially love the time I can spend with my Bible studying the Word and illustrating the lessons I have learned.

My very first Bible Journaling page was meant to
convey my reasons for starting this new hobby.
If you are interested in Bible Journaling, you can find lots of examples on Pinterest and by Google search. There are also several Facebook groups for Bible Journaling, which makes it very easy to learn and share.  I won’t share too many of my pages, because that’s not what this blog is about, but I wanted to show my beginnings, and I may share other pages from time to time.

The last thing I wanted to share with you is the dates for our next cruise!  Mark your calendars and get ready to join us on TWO new scrapbooking cruises including the 9th Annual Crafty Neighbor Scrapbooking Cruise departing January 8, 2017 and our all new Crafty Neighbor Scrap Cruise Lite departing October 3, 2016.  You can find out more about each of the cruises by clicking on the links, or send me an email at cruise@craftyneighbor.com.

That’s it for today!  Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at some of the projects from our annual cruise.  I have some fun layouts, craft projects and mini albums to share with you plus a give-away later this week!  Until then, go do something crafty!

Behind the Times!

Good grief!  The last two months have been a whirlwind of activity for Crafty Neighbor, and this poor blog has been blown to the far reaches of Forgotten Land.  First we had Pam's Pals and then we had our 5th Annual Scrapbooking Cruise.  We're back now, and we had a great time, but now there's a big stack of work sitting on the desk!  Oh, the price we pay for having fun.  And we did have fun, didn't we?  We'll let you be the judge.

Pam's Pals Benefit Crop raised more than $1800 to help fight breast cancer.  The money was donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure on behalf of 3-Day walkers Mallory Duggan, Christen Murray, Pam Wilemon, and me.  This donation will allow us to walk and/or crew the 2013 3-Day event November 2-4, 2013, bringing more awareness to this very important cause.  If you are interested in learning more about Susan G. Komen, the the 3-Day, or our Pam's Pals event, please visit our website.

As you probably know, we just returned last week from our eagerly anticipated annual scrapbooking cruise.  This was the first year for me to coordinate the cruise without my dear friend and partner, Pam Wilemon, and I have to say I was more than a little nervous about tackling the job by myself.  It really is a two-person job.  So in May, when Close to My Heart demonstrator Valerie Jackson (also of Dallas Crafters Marathon) agreed to teach some classes and lend me a hand, I was more than thrilled.  Valerie turned out to be a great partner, and after sharing my vision with her, we set out together to present what I think was the best scrapbooking cruise Crafty Neighbor has organized to date.  We did a lot of things differently this year and it really shows!

Now that we're back, we're busy planning our calendar for next year and we'll have another cruise in the works very soon.  Watch for details here and on our website.  In the meantime, find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/CraftyNeighbor, and enjoy the pictures from our events!

I {Heart} Stamp Club!

Have I ever mentioned my stamp club?  I am so lucky that I get to play hostess to a group of ladies every month for a Stampin’ Up card/stamp club taught by the one and only Sharon Armstrong.  I love getting together with a lot of crafty people and learning new crafty things!  We have a card swap each month, using a pre-set theme, and then we make cards or other projects that Sharon brings us.  Here’s a few of the cards we swapped this month.

I just love seeing everyone else’s interpretation of the theme, which, if you couldn't tell, was "Invitations".  These are some really crafty ladies!  And in case you didn't notice, that last one is actually made from a coaster!  Our very own Christen made that.  Isn't it just too cute?!

Another thing I love about stamp club is that I learn something new just about every time we get together.  This week, we learned a little about Stampin’ Up’s new ink pads.  They’re made out of a new felt-type material, so they are really juicy and you don’t have to tap your stamp into them as hard as you did with the older pads.  Here are the cards we made tonight.

Before all the stamp club ladies got here today, I was going through some emails.  One of my discussion groups has been sharing photos of their work spaces and I shared a link to my blog where I had posted some pictures of the crop room a while back.  But as I typed up my reply, I took a look around my room and was kind of shocked and ashamed at what a mess my room was.  Of course, I had to clean it all up before the stamp club ladies got here.  So I guess one of the things I really like about having stamp club here every month is that at least I know my room will get cleaned up before hand!

Seriously, though, if you haven’t joined a scrapbooking or cardmaking group, you are really missing out.  Everything I know about scrapbooking I learned from other scrapbookers, and if you are crafting alone, then how will you ever learn anything new?  I encourage all scrapbookers and cardmakers to get out there and find a group where you can socialize, try new products, and learn how to create all kinds of things.  Organized crops and events are a great way to learn new ways to use your old supplies.  Some groups have swaps, and many even trade supplies!  Meetup.com is a great place to look for groups in your area, or check your local scrapbook store or in-home consultants like Creative Memories, Stampin’ Up! And Close to My Heart.

If you live in the Dallas area, don’t forget to come out for our scrapbook garage sale!  We’ll be at the Girl Scout office at 6001 Summerside Drive, Dallas from 9:00 AM until 3 PM, Saturday, July 7.  All our seller spaces are full, so that means there is going to be a ton of stuff for you to buy at dirt cheap garage sale prices!

Also, registration is now open for our Pam’s Pals benefit crop to fight breast cancer.  Come on out and spend the whole day with us raising money for this great cause.  For more information, check out our website at:  http://www.craftyneighbor.com/retreats/2012/pamspals12/2012pink.html

Christmas retreat

Thanks ever-so-much to Peter and Ida Wilson for donating a scrapbooking retreat weekend to raffle at our  Pam's Pals cause!  After all was said and done, we wound up with a group of 9 for the weekend of the 11th and we had a great time.  A lot of people passed on this great opportunity because it was "too close to the holidays" or they were too busy, but I tell ya', you don't know what you're missing!  December is the perfect time for a scrapbooking retreat, because it takes you away from the chaotic hustle and bustle and gives you time to just breathe, relax and do a little something for yourself (and you know you've been neglecting yourself for a long time!).  I also found that it was the perfect opportunity to finish up a lot of the handmade gifts that I hadn't been able to finish at home.  So thank you Scrappin' Around the Corner in Denton!  I'm sure we'll be calling you again next year!

Great American Scrapbook Convention

You’ve heard the expression, “A day late and a dollar short,” right? Well that just about sums up the situation after spending three days at the Great American Scrapbook Convention in Arlington, Texas last week. The Crafty Neighbors were at GASC all three days (maybe you saw us there in our matching t-shirts?). We passed out lots of free product and met lots of vendors and store owners. We were especially excited to make contact with some potential suppliers of new products and to arrange a retail deal with Susie from Scrappin’ Goodtime in Corsicana. Susie bought out our entire stock of Album Spacers to sell in her store there.

So how are we a day late and a dollar short? Well, basically, we spent all our money on some really good deals (who can resist QuicKutz fonts for $40? or Stickles at buy 4 get 1 free?). And as for being a day late, well, it’s a lot of work putting away all that stuff. I mean, we gotta hide it so our husbands don’t see it, right?

Seriously, though, we learned a lot of techniques and came up with so many ideas for new products that we just can’t wait to show you. Some of our new products will be showing up on the website immediately, and some will come in the following weeks. Needless to say, you should check back often. Some of these items are one-of-a-kind-never-to-be-seen-again, and there’s going to be new stuff added almost daily (or at least we hope!).

We hope you like what you see, and please leave us some feedback. We’d like to know what you like and don’t like about our site, what kinds of products you’d like to see, and just about anything else you’d like to share with us!
